Inducted in 1980, Thomas H. Davis learned to fly at age 16. In 1939 he became sales manager for Camel City Flying Service, later Piedmont Aviation. Elected president of Piedmont in 1943, he obtained several airline routes in the southeast, and Piedmont has continued a steady growth to the extent that it became one of the largest regional airlines in the United States.
