Hartley A. Soule

Inducted in 1979, Hartley A. Soule was a pioneering scientist in the development of the United States research airplane program. As head of airplane research at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), he developed programs in which aircraft first broke the sound barrier. During his tenure at NACA, later NASA, he began on the X-1 rocket airplane and worked through the X-15 project.
